Morgan K. Wyattabout this book: I wanted a heroine for Rebel Bride women could identify with, but she'd cause some friction too. Enter Eileen Sewell who has all the arrogance and pride of Scarlet O'Hara. She is well aware that she is the top heiress in the county, but still refuses all marriage offers. This is enough to make most readers dislike her.
Her redeeming quality is she is kind to her naïve, younger sister, Emily. It is also a little easier to like her when the Civil War pretty much destroys any chance of her marrying and having a traditional life. The best she can hope to do is beguile a man looking for a mail order bride. The men preferred women with lush hair and an obedient manner. Eileen does have the hair, but following a man's directions never figured in her way of doing things.
Even on the way out to see her new husband, Montgomery, she winds up in the first train robbery in Jasper, Indiana committed by the Reno Gang. Marshal Colt Shepard tries to pry information from a resistant Eileen who is sure giving up information to the handsome Marshal will make her a target for the robbers. She's right.
