Cheryl Piersonabout this book: HOMECOMING is a short story that I wrote about a Union officer, Jack Durham, who finds himself on an errand of mercy for a very young Confederate soldier, Billy Anderson. As he lays dying, Billy asks Jack to carry his possessions home to his family, about ten miles away from where the battle has taken place. Jack agrees, but on the way to Billy's home, he's filled with self doubt about such a mission. As odd things begin to happen along the way, Jack realizes he has let the circumstances of his life make him bitter. Can his mission for a dying man ease his conscience and prepare him for what is yet to come? It would be a miracle, but this IS Christmas Day...
When I wrote this story, I didn't know why I wrote it or where the idea came from. I put it on the shelf, waiting for the best opportunity to try to sell it, but wasn't sure if or when that might come along, it was such an odd story. Months later, Rebecca Vickery had put out a call for stories for her Christmas anthologies. With a little tweaking, I was able to submit this story to her. It does have romantic elements in it, but that's not the main focus of the story--the meaning is deeper than that, but also encompasses the romance.
I hope you'll enjoy reading HOMECOMING as much as I enjoyed writing it.
