Mary L. Hamiltonabout this book: Can a blind kid struggle with pornography?
That's the question I had to answer when I set out to write See No Evil. Initially, I'd intended to bring Steven (a supporting character in Books 1 and 2) back in this third book having had a corneal transplant allowing him to see. I'd planned to have him find a girly magazine in the cabin and realize he has temptations he never had to deal with before.
But while researching corneal transplants among people who have grown up blind, I discovered these people lack many things sighted people take for granted. For example, someone who has been blind from a very young age never develops depth perception. They can't recognize faces, even of close loved ones, because they've never learned to associate the face with the person. Facial expressions mean nothing to them, because they've never connected the expression with the emotion it represents. They'll have trouble with colors. Think how many shades of blonde there are, or the difference between navy and baby blue, yet they're both considered blue.
I could've used this information in See No Evil, but feared it might take over the story. My editor wanted to keep the pornography angle, so I had to find a way for this blind 17 yr. old boy to get tangled up in pornography. The result is a heart-breaking story of a young man's love for his dad and the guilt he carries associated with his dad's death three years earlier.
Other themes in the book include accepting one's handicap, friendship, cancer and serious illness, and selfless love. And if you've read the other books in the Rustic Knoll Bible Camp series, you'll enjoy the end notes in See No Evil.
