Victoria Schwimleyabout this book: Capturing Faith is the story of three youth and a pastor whose lives all intersect in one catastrophic event.
Chelsea Warren is one of the most popular girls in school. Everyone follows Chelsea. Everyone wants to be Chelsea…well, at least most everyone.
Amber Walker has known Chelsea most of her life. Once near friends, they grow apart. Chelsea's family has money, or at least she likes to make everyone think they do. What people don't know, because Chelsea hides the fact from them, is her father has lost his job.
Amber's family has raised her with a religious faith that has sealed a rock solid foundation in God. She has a strong head on her shoulders and uses her common sense to guide people on the right path.
When an argument between Chelsea and her group leaves Chelsea kicked out of the group, Amber reaches out to her and begins to show Chelsea a different way of life.
Ryan Evers has one goal in life; get into an Ivy League school. He will do anything to get in, including staying up all night studying, taking caffeine tablets to stay awake, and downing mass amounts of coffee. Then one night, it all catches up with him. He falls asleep while driving and strikes one of the girls with his car. He leaves the scene of the accident and hides his guilt from his friends and family.
With nowhere to turn, he confesses to Pastor David, who tries to keep the community together in the face of the tragedy.
This story came to me when I was a youth leader and saw how much caffeine the kids were consuming, and how the overall lifestyle of the kids surrounding me was affecting their health. That's when I decided to write this story. I wanted the kids to see what could happen if we fail to take care of ourselves.
The hardest part of writing this story was judging how far to go without pushing the kids too far. I wanted them to take something from the story, so I decided to write it as a stage play first. We rehearsed for weeks before the performance. The kids used the performance to raise funds for their summer mission trip. They had a lot of fun, and the hours spent rehearsing and performing really helped the meaning sink in.
