Author Audrey Kaneabout this book: Want an adventure? Be careful what you wish for…

WATCH OUT! This book for middle grade readers follows the life of Violet, a purple-skinned girl whose purple spreads to everything she touches… Is she magical? Is she the devil's child—or simply cursed? One boy dares to befriend her. But when he leaves unexpectedly, Violet takes off on a dangerous journey to find him. Violet must rely on her own resources, and she can't risk being seen—she's purple, for goodness sake! Will Violet unlock her secret? Can she change her destiny? There is only one way to find out… In this coming-of-age tale, self-discovery, discrimination, and self-acceptance are interwoven with adventure and suspense.

At the core of every story, the need to belong is often a theme that resonates with readers. The Purple Girl explores Violet's story and is designed to support children in discovering acceptance and individuality, and gives parents discussion points to share. While written for children, this thought-provoking adventure—and its surprising twists—will delight readers of all ages. The Purple Girl is shaped to empower young girls and help them embrace their identities.

As a writer, and also a designer of tapestries with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia, it is only natural for me to weave visual stories. Somehow, color or art always seems to wriggle its way into my writing. I'm also drawn to fantastical escapes and historical fiction because I love stepping into different worlds. But the real inspiration for The Purple Girl are the children and adults that overcome obstacles every day. And always lingering in the back of my mind are amazing kids that feel lonely or different.
