Drew Maywaldabout this book: This beautifully illustrated children's story is the first in a series of books featuring Tom Goode and his mower Mervin the Magic Mower. In this first book young Tom rescues an old mower from the scrap heap and with Mr Pickle's help he restores to working order, only to discover that his mower that he calls Mervin, is a magic mower because it can talk - but only Tom knows this.
I began telling Mervin the Magic Mower stories to my 4 sons 30 years ago and at their urging have decided to self-publish these magical stories. The books are aimed at children nine and under but many adults have written to me saying how much they have enjoyed the book. Here are two reviews that I recently received:
"It's so funny - our kids are definitely beyond the 'kids book' phase, but we've all loved reading Mervin the Magic Mower!"
Peta, Skagen's Mum.
"Mervin the Magic Mower is my daughters' favourite book. It is beautifully illustrated without being too busy, and because of its size it is easy for children to pick up and hold."
Jodie, mother of Frejya and Nykyta.
Before printing the first book, I distributed sample copies to around 25 people to read and give me feedback. Feedback from two different people in Sydney and the Gold Coast, who read it to their 4-year-old boys, was that after hearing the story, all both boys talked about for the rest of the day was lawn mowers.
I gave the book to 9 & 10-year-old girls. Both girls enjoyed the story. The 9-year said that she couldn't wait for the next story and loved the way that the mower was a magic mower and could talk. The girls now want to organise a book launch for me at their school early this year. The 10-year old said that she really enjoyed the story.
I read the book to a 5 and a 7-year-old boy. Both boys asked me to read it to them again. They also wanted to write their own Mervin story which I helped them do. Since then they frequently ask their parents to read it to them at bedtime.
Prior to writing the stories, I consulted with my local library to review the type of books that boys and girls under 9 are currently enjoying, and believe that the books are ideal for children under 9, and the language is very suitable.
I also met with a retired primary school principal who read drafts of three of the books. She commented that they would be great in schools, because they send a clear anti-bullying message and have a positive outcome of helping people in need. She believes they will be very successful and wants to be involved in launching them on the Gold Coast in 2014.
By writing the stories I have found that I really enjoy writing them and coming up with the humour in each story. Each book contains a 'kids friendly' recipe and challenges the reader, or listener, to use their imagination.
In the second book, currently being illustrated by my wonderful illustrator Benita Godfrey, the reader discovers that Mervin has other magical powers. One third of my income from this book will be donated to the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation to help find a cure and treatment for this debilitating and often fatal genetic disease.
These stories have been edited by my wife and with Benita's wonderful illustrations they have exceeded my expectations. I am very proud to make them available to all children. By buying my books you will not only help me realise a 30 year dream but will help children, and their parents, with Mitochondrial Disease.
