Sarah Barnardabout this book: You know when your kids see you reading and come and lean on you, asking, "Mum, can I read that too?" Well, it's even worse for a writer, and you often have to say No, you are not reading this!
My own children wanted to read something I'd written and The Map and the Stone is the result of 27 days of November 2009. The book was written with my then 10 year old in mind as a competent and confident reader. He wanted a boy as the main character and he said the boy wasn't to have any siblings, but he was to live with his mum and have an adventure.
He also said that any book he read had to have some pictures. I wrote the first draft in 27 days, gathered some online friends who are artists for the illustrations and spent the next year editing and working on that initial draft. The Map and the Stone was first published the following Hallowe'en: October 31st 2010.
Rhys Newton is ten years old, has dark, curly hair and brown eyes and lives with his mum, Lou in the heart of England in a town that closely resembles the real town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. One day he finds a strange creature sitting on his bed and it asks him for help.
The Darkling, for that is how the creature is known, needs someone special after it was banished from it's home by a woman it calls "The Mistress". Can Rhys help?
