S. J. Hendersonabout this book: Daniel the Camp-er is a funny and unique book about a boy with a magic pencil that brings his drawings to life. Daniel's a shy kid still learning how to make friends beyond his best friend, Annie, and these stories show him as he learns to be a friend to others and embrace the differences in his friends and the situations he encounters.
This book is the second in a series, written to encourage reluctant readers in the 8-12 age range. I've had great success presenting this series to schools in my area, and the first book in the series even won an award through Readers' Favorite (this book is in the running for the contest this year).
Two of my boys are on the spectrum for autism and Aspergers, and I've based many of the elements of this story on them and their friends. My sons helped me come up with the character names and some of the magical creatures; it's a fun memory we will always share.
