Alice V. Walters

Author Alice V. Waltersabout this book: LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE is a collection of faith-based stories about the adventures, challenges and lessons of precocious bunny twins. It is a story book, not a picture book. The bunny characters and setting are meant to be universal, so that LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE can be shared in diverse settings. I have shared it in classrooms and urban housing units, and have colleagues who have used it in their religion classes, along with Sunday School classes.
The stories are inspired by the children in my life, especially my students in our urban school district. While the stories are slightly intertwined, each one can stand alone, and they can be read in any order.
Hard topics, such as death and loss, are addressed through the eyes of children. Overcoming struggles through a lens of faith means embracing love, hope and forgiveness. That said, stories are also laced with humor to keep young readers and listeners engaged. Stories are intended to be shared between a child and devoted adult, due to topics and vocabulary.
Bobby and Bonnie seemed to write their own stories, and it wasn’t until after it was published that I realized the actual characters were based on two children near and dear to my heart. Bobby is my nephew, Alex, all boy, sports, friends and fun. Bonnie is one of my very favorite students, Tyari, sometimes a little selfish and vain, but with a heart big enough to learn to love those different from herself.
The underlying message of LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE is that life isn’t always easy, fair or predictable. Sometimes painful things happen. The good news is that we’re not alone in our challenges and we don’t have to stay in those hard places.
