Anne Aldenabout this book: "With frenetic Taiwan as the backdrop, this novel captures a relationship in decline, marred by uncertainty, loneliness and suspicion. The expat lifestyle and its trappings...drivers, maids, banquet dinners...alienate Lace, the once doting wife, and push her in search of new relationships to fill the ebb of her own marriage." (MGoodwin review)
I wrote this book to reflect a time back in the late 1990's, way before skype, twitter and iphones came on the scene to allow you to keep in close touch with back home. As an expat back then, I remember calling my parents with a large clock in front of me ticking away at about $1.00 per minute. Far, far away one felt very isolated. Things were difficult and problems became exagerated.
This story focuses on the negative aspects of expat life, which are valid and make for a juicy story.
As a veteran expat, perhaps my next book will include the "fabulous and amazing".
This too exists, which is why we keep accepting those foreign assignments!!!
