Amelia Frahmabout this book: "Tickles Tabitha's Cancer-tankerous Mommy" was written for and about the author's own family.
Amelia Frahm was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. Her daughter, Tabitha was 4 years old and her son, Jordan was only two. Talking to young children about a serious subject like cancer was not a popular idea and large publishing houses rejected Frahm's book idea. Her book didn't just picture a loving mom with cancer, but a family having to deal with the emotional rollercoaster caused by cancer. The mom in her book was also angry with dad, aggravated with her children and always hungry.
Frahm published her book in 2001 and went on to be the first cancer survivor to create a cancer education program for elementary students, which includes a life-sized Tickles Tabitha character.
Kids today find it hard to believe, but back when she wrote and published "Tickles Tabitha's Cancer-tankerous Mommy" talking to her own children about her cancer raised eyebrows and reading her book to students at the local elementary school was unheard of!
Today Frahm's considered a pioneer for offering resources for families coping with cancer.
