|4.7 stars based on the 3 most helpful Amazon reviews|
Phil Grahamabout this book: "Dare to Flee" is the story of Xai, a Bushman tracker and his quest to hunt down the person responsible for the death of his best friend. His search takes him into the heart of the Kalahari Desert where he meets up with a tribe of other Bushmen whose ancestors have lived there for more than 20,000 years. The story is also about the fight for survival of the Bushmen Nation, as the Botswana Army hunts them down in order to relocate all the Bushmen to Settlement camps, hundreds of miles away from their traditional hunting grounds.
• What inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write this book during the Rhodesian bush war where I served with a Bushman tracker. These people have incredible knowledge of the Flora and Fauna in the Kalahari, unequalled by anyone else. Their respect for the land and its inhabitants is legendary.
• How long did it take to write it?
The book took me thirteen years to write, caused by the necessity of having to work, and a period of illness.
• Did you do research for your book? What did that involve?
Research into the world of the Bushmen was partially obtained from experiences during the bush war and reference to books and the internet for the finer details.
• Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Lessons learned as a result of writing this book, are that the easy part of the exercise is writing the book. The hard bit is the publishing and marketing!
• What do you want to say to your readers?
The message that I want to get across to readers is that, as human-beings, we cannot allow the extinction of the Bushmen to happen, as it did to the North American Indians in America and the Aboriginal people of Australia. The Botswana Government must be stopped in its attempt to commit genocide.
