D.H. Allenabout this book: Goose Creek is a look into the complexities of teenage boys being best friends. It's a story of bullying, shunning, and shame. The book's title is derived from the name of a creek that meanders through Loudoun County, Virginia, a creek I played and fished in growing up. The setting is an equestrian estate owned by Virginia's wealthiest woman. Having been raised in the Northern Virginia countryside and familiar with the intricacies of life in the area, I used this background to weave this story.
Everything these boys are to become happens near a small creek. When they first meet Dare is trying to make sense of an awful day at school and home. James, who declares upon first meeting Dare that they are going to be friends, is struggling to hold it together. His dad is dying. Together, with a foundling dog that loves Dare and James, a small town prostitute with her own demons, and a loyal English butler who believes in them, the youths traverse the challenges of teenage boys to manhood.
Neither Dare nor James is aware their friendship will dredge up secrets on such a scale it becomes a deadly game.
