Book: The Journey by Christina Bertacategories: Book, Belgium, Strangers, Event, Problems, Life, Journey, Travel, City, Brussels
Christina Bertaabout this book: The Journey is a short novel set in my former hometown of Brussels, Belgium. Although a work of fiction, the characters in the book are based on my experiences of living in this cosmopolitan city.
The idea for the book was inspired by my decision to relocate to Saudi Arabia. When it finally dawned on me that, after living in Brussels for twelve years, I would soon be leaving, I felt that I owed it to myself – and to my daughters, who were born and brought up here – to create a legacy based on my observations.
The title is based on the fact that each of the ten characters in the novel goes through a 'journey' - a kind of learning curve, if you like - emerging as a stronger person at the end. The cover is a collection of stamps from various European countries, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the characters in the book.
My next book will be about my Arabian adventures in the Middle East. Contrary to 'The Journey', it will be a work of non-fiction and will document the entire relocation process, including the numerous difficulties we faced prior to obtaining our visas for Saudi Arabia. It will also provide great insight into living in one of the most intriguing countries in the world, albeit one of the most difficult to enter.
