David D. D'Aguannoabout this book: This particular book (and the following book in the series: "Beach Bum Brett") came about largely as a result of the plentiful amount of time that I spent at the beach when I was younger. In addition, I thought that it might be a nice change of pace to remove Brett from his usual stomping ground (the fictitious Birchwood, Rhode Island) and give him some quality beach time himself.
Actually, this book underwent more rewrites than all the others. What happened was that some of the characters (Marcus Wade, in particular) were being depicted as so strong and dominating that Brett's normally overpowering personality seemed dwarfed to some extent. So, in maintaining Brett's supremacy (so to speak),I attempted to diminish the amount of attention that I was giving to some of the other characters since Brett (the first-person narrator) is so self-absorbed and conceited that he would never allow another person to take over in any given situation.
As usual, there are scenes here that, by rights, wouldn't take place in real life without the police stepping in and making an arrest, but anyone who reads, or has read any book in this series knows that the primary purpose of a Brett Cornell novel is simply to entertain.
