Book Review: The Frugal Book Promoter - How to get nearly free publicity on your own or by partnering with your publisher. (How to Do It Frugally) by Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Carolyn Howard-Johnsonabout this book: So, back in 2001 when my award-winning novel was published, did I fall into some huge marketing potholes? I'll say! $35,000 worth of marketing potholes.
Traditional publishers are supposed to take one's book, ask for no money from the author, give them an advance and market them. Then comes the royalties. But that's not the way it worked. They mostly forgot the "marketing" part. So I hired a publicist. That is where the $35,000 came in--an inheritance from my aunt.
Then came an uphill learning experience even though it was routed in my experience as a NY publicist, journalist, and PR classes at the University of Southern California (USC). Then came The Frugal Book Promoter when I started teaching new authors at UCLA's renowned Writers' Program. I NEEDED a textbook that would give authors the detail they need for our specialized kind of marketing. That was in 2007 and it is now in its second edition. And a multi award-winner. And books and booklets for writers followed. The HowToDoItFrugally series of books for writers.
It's that practical experience and light voice that has made this book a standout for so many years. I mean, no one wants just one more dry old text.
• "You name it Carolyn Howard-Johnson covers it in her new edition of The Frugal Book Promoter: How to get nearly free publicity on your own or by partnering with your publisher. It includes what she calls the Eighteen Publicity Commandments, a Marketing Umbrella, and media kits. Without them you will not be able to survive promoting your book frugally. It is a must read book to learn all the secrets Carolyn Howard- Johnson has known for decades. And now she wants to share them with you."

a review by Lance JohnsonI've used this book to promote another AskDavid book, What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z and highly recommend it. It's practical and it doesn't read like the dry old marketing texts I had to read in college. Lots of good down-to-earth, simple stuff for authors.
