Linda Naomi Katz

Author Linda Naomi Katzabout this book: My book, Surviving Mental Illness, has won an award by Readers Favorite, as one of the best autobiographies that was written. Surviving Mental Illness is about the challenging times I had to struggle with of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental illness. However, mental illness became a factor for me, during childhood, because my mother became mentally sick. I was way to young to understand mental illness back then, but as I grew up to adulthood, it was going to be something huge that I did not even know I would become a mental health advocate.

Surviving Mental Illness, explores how I struggled to breakthrough the stigma that surrounds those with mental illnesses. As for me, I experienced more stigma within my own family then I did from the outside world. In my book, I also defined what mental illness is and the various treatments, resources, and organizations that can promote a person to reach recovery. I also show how having faith in God and Judaism gave me hope and inspiration towards leaning to a better mental health.

What motivated me to write Surviving Mental Illness was to show mental illness consumers and their families that they are not alone and that working in the mental health sector helped me understand the issues that we are facing today.

I expect that most of my readers will attract those consumers and families with mental illness, people who work in the mental health sector, and those within the Jewish community. Being an orthodox Jew, I have experienced how biased the Jewish community can be and the lack of education they have on mental illness.

As a result, I would like my readers to know that there is hope and that recovery is something everyone can achieve if they work hard enough at it. There will always be ups and downs because that is what recovery from mental illness is about, living life.
