Author Doug Erlandsonabout this book: This book is an introduction to bioethics. Written in a clear and jargon-free way, it discusses the central issues of bioethics--abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, cloning and stem-cell research, in-vitro fertilization and other reproductive techniques, the testing of drugs through animal and human experimentation, the allocation of scarce medical resources, patient autonomy, and more.

Through my years of teaching applied ethics and bioethics, I came to realize the need for a book that described and discussed the issues in a way that was accessible to people who did not have a background in philosophy or science. It was important to present these issues in a way that was not oversimplified and that maintained intellectual integrity.

This book is clearly written for the layperson who has no prior background in philosophy or science (particularly the biosciences). It is also appropriate as a text for students in an introductory class in bioethics.

Because this is one of several books that I have written or plan to write as introductions to various areas of philosophy, most of the title was already determined, namely, " ___ Basics: A Jargon-free Guide for Beginners." (For example, one of the other books in this series is: "Philosophy of Religion Basics: A Jargon-free Guide for Beginners.")

The hardest part of writing this book was making sure that the technical scientific information was accurate and that I had explained it in a way that a non-scientist could understand. Based on the response so far, I believe I have accomplished this goal.
