Book: Nothing Down by Mike Reuthercategories: Book, Yankees, New York, Cooperstown, Baseball
Mike Reutherabout this book: "Nothing Down" is the story of Homer Newbody, a rookie pitching sensation for the New York Yankees who loves the game of baseball and is knowledgeable about the game's history. Homer is an unlikely hero, undersized with less than adequate pitching skills, he relies on pinpoint control honed through many years of practice to be competitive. He's different from Major Leaguers in other ways as well. He simply doesn't care about the big money to be made in professional sports. In fact, he announces to the world that he would be happy to play for nothing. This draws cynicism and criticism from teammates, opposing players, the media and others. Soon, the small town kid who only wanted to play baseball, finds himself coping with all sorts of distractions.
As a lifelong passionate baseball fan, a story of this sort was burning in my brain for many years. This book took several years to write, although most of the first draft of it was written quite fast.
There was really no research for the book. This is a work of fiction. As a very knowledgeable baseball fan fascinated by the game's past, I was able to draw on the many pieces of baseball trivia that I drop into the story at different times.
Writing is always a learning experience. You start with an idea and the story takes on a life of its own. Each time I write a book this very fact reinforces itself.
This book is about following a dream and seeing it through, despite the obstacles one encounters along the way.
You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the story.
