Margaret Tannerabout this book: Fear almost crushes Thomasina (Tommy) Lindsay when she realizes the enormity of what she has undertaken - a run down farm in frontier Australia. From the gentle green English fields, her journey takes her to a land beset by the tyranny of distance. Danger lurks around every corner for the unwary. Savage natives, bushfires and a harsh, unforgiving environment, not to mention a hostile neighbor who is hell-bent on getting rid of her. She dare not fail for the sake of her orphaned five year old brother.
Tommy lived a privileged life in England, but on her father's death she is shocked to find she and her brothers have been left virtually penniless. To inherit a farm in Australia from an eccentric uncle was an answer to their prayers. A chance to start over in a new land where those who were prepared to work and make sacrifices could succeed. White skinned blue eyed and blonde, she might look the typical English rose, but this pale fragility hides her true persona, that of a brave, resourceful young woman. She is prepared to adapt to the harsh climate, go without the luxuries she once thought essential and stand up to any danger that might confront her.
Hopefully she will eventually find true love. A strong man, one who will love and cherish her without crushing her spirit, but he has to be prepared to love her little orphaned brother as well, and a man like this will be difficult to find. She could not find him in England, but in the untamed frontiers of Australia, such a man might exist.
