Randy Brileyabout this book: Excerpt from Sketchboy's Introduction, "The Art of Doodling", by Randy Briley:
I'm a very cerebral, calculated and well-planned professional artist. These doodles, however, slipped out under the radar. They snuck out of my head like cats stalking birds. Often, I'd be on the phone and once done and disconnected I'd look down and see one of these characters looking up at me as if to say, "Hello, boss. How are things?" Weird, right? But don't worry; I don't have a brain tumor or a multiple personality disorder. I was just letting my art do its own thing. It's an interesting concept. As someone who has recruited and trained artists for years, I can see when an artist is in his own way. As we learn, we imitate, we get inspired by other artists and we want to know their secrets. As digital artists, we download the brushes our heroes use and the textures they favor and try to recreate our work in their image. It fails most times. Eventually, if we are lucky, then we use those lessons to feed our own style. I have been an incredible chameleon over the years and have had to create art for just about every popular license that you can think of, from Barbie to "Kung Fu Panda" to "The Lord of the Rings" and everything in between. So, for me these doodles represent an emerging style that is finally my own. The thin bodies, the round eyes with simple pupils and the big round heads were mine and mine alone and that has been exciting to watch. I'm not sure where it will go but I don't see any sign of it stopping right now.
