Book: The Stone Picker by Chris Leandro

Chris Leandroabout this book: The Stone Picker is a novel, an archaeological thriller. Mostly about a guy called Pen struggling with the usual 'what the hell am I doing here' existential problems of a forty year old. Needless to say he does not resolve that problem, but he's an obsessive collector f prehistoric artifacts, an activity that throws up enough problems to make that one seem insignificant. He and his little family are thrown into a surreal, brutal roller coaster ride that transforms them all.
This book is a great way to get to know the countryside and the history of the south west of France. It is also a factual introduction to prehistory, but above all it is a well written great escape.
I researched the material for The Stone Picker for several years while living in the Dordogne region of France. Though I had no plan when I started writing it the story took over, I have the impression it wrote its self. I then spent a couple of years working on re writes and revisions.
This story is also about the pitfalls of collecting. There is a sequence in the book that deals with an auction the cover photo was kindly donated by a Paris auction house and is as good an image as any to illustrate the treasure describes within.
