Fiona Ingramabout this book: I am (like many people) an animal lover but only recently I became actively involved in writing about animal rescue. I read about a little dog (Champ) in California, dumped at a shelter, his seemingly lifeless body wrapped in several plastic bags. The desk clerk thought he was already dead when they unwrapped this gruesome parcel. Miraculously, the shelter vet revived him. Miraculously, the dog lived. A no-kill shelter in Thousand Oaks called S.A.F.E. Rescue took him in and thus began Champ's long road back to life. He was, literally, hanging by a thread: unable to walk, eat, or drink on his own, the little creature couldn't even bark or whimper although he was in terrible pain from the dreadful wounds covering his frail body.
Amazingly, once S.A.F.E. Rescue posted his story on Facebook, messages of love and support came pouring in from all over the world. People sent comfy blankets, nourishing food, and much-needed funding. I was so moved by this brave little dog's fight to survive, and his renewed love for and trust in humans that I offered to write a fund-raising e-book documenting Champ's story, and raising awareness about the extent of animal abuse. Like most small rescue organizations, S.A.F.E. Rescue depends on funding from generous supporters. S.A.F.E. Rescue and I (and Champ) joined forces and the book was born as Champ got a grip on his new life. So many people sent me letters to Champ (to be included in the book) saying how rooting for Champ had changed their lives and enabled them to overcome their own problems. People also said they were now helping at animal shelters, and had more love and appreciation for their own pets.
Champ has become an icon of hope and a symbol of what can happen when someone stands up and says NO to animal abuse. Champ's book is a must-read for animal lovers, with his heart-warming tale of a new life, a short "super-hero" fiction story for younger readers, a "Pome" by Champ, and tips on how one can help in the fight against animal abuse. Champ is busy with his next book, Champ & Joe: Best Friends Forever, with his co-author Joe, a little blind rescued dog whose life has also been forever changed by S.A.F.E. Rescue. I am even more involved now, with several more animal rescue books in the pipeline. All are fund-raisers, and proceeds got to the rescue sites involved.
