Lance Johnsonabout this book: What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z is a book I wrote because so many of those from other countries (more than 85 of them!) asked me to. Then I started hearing from immigrants and business people who live here in the US who were baffled by our incredibly diverse and confusing culture and language (that would be English! American English!). So, I decided to tell it like it is. The good, the bad, and the warts. Most are tired of the anti rhetoric from some and the overdone praise from others.
What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z covers everything from our amazing (and it truly is) geography to our difficult language including idioms. I simplify the most confusing aspects of the culture like baseball and grammar. I throw in lists of how our country has been influenced by immigrants in every chapter, naming them, their countries, and how they have made America shine.
But mostly I have tried to make it easier for people who are moving to America, trying to open a business in America, studying in America, or visiting in America. That approach is being well received. It was chosen for Fulbright scholars coming to our universities to read. Carnegie-Mellon asked to reprint a portion of the book for one of their classes. It now resides in more than 300 university libraries and career centers. A press in the Ukraine is translating and printing it. And it was printed in simplified Chinese by Oriental Press in China. And yes, it won the Reader's Favorite award and was given a nod by Global Ebook Awards. And it was edited by Carolyn Howard-Johnson.
It is available worldwide on iterations of Amazon's Web sites--from Japan to Germany, to the UK, to the US.

The Language Section Is Especially Useful
a review by Carolyn Howard-JohnsonI use this book when I tutor my Asian-emirgrant students. Tips in this book even let me teach them how to distinguish (and prounounce!) their "Ls" and "Rs."
