Troy D. Smith about this book: Critically acclaimed winner of the prestigious Spur Award! This historical epic follows ex-slave Alfred Mann as he escapes the plantation, fights in the Civil War, faces prejudice and violence in the Reconstruction South and the streets and docks of New York, fights Indians as a Buffalo Soldier, and charges up San Juan Hill- all is search of the elusive ideal of freedom. It is a powerful and moving saga that you won't soon forget. As reviewer Kathleen Rice Adams recently said in a Western Fictioneers review: "If it isn't already, the book should be required reading alongside classics by Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and other authors known for the historic and cultural significance of their work." This novel was one of ten highlighted last year by the Manhattan Public Library in an article entitled "Classic and Award-Winning Westerns."
As a history professor, I put great value on accuracy- I did extensive research for six months before writing the first page of this book, which took the better part of three years to draft. I wanted to explore themes of freedom, redemption, and heroism, and highlight the extensive contributions of African Americans to the U.S. Military in the nineteenth century.
