Jim Parksabout this book: • Why did I write this book?
Actually, in the fall of 2012, I was writing a nonfiction book. One author I admire and follow is Bill Myers. He has one nonfiction book and two fiction books. I have all of them. The "Mango Bob" novel is a great read.
Anyway, he mentioned once that his fiction books sold a lot more than his nonfiction book. That comment surprised me, as I knew nothing about the book business. I thought about his comment and said to myself, "I can do that!"
So, I spent two weeks kicking around in my head an idea for a novel. Next, I spent a few days expanding on those ideas in an outline form. With the outline done, I started writing the book. I started in January 2013 in my spare time and published it the end of May 2013.
I worked for a number of years in an architectural and engineering firm. I had significant work (and writing) experience in marketing and HR. I also learned a general overview about how a design comes together. I use that background in my "Karma Novels" series.
For the first time, AskDavid.com readers, I disclose the origin of Charlie Walker's favorite food in "Karma Goes Around". No, I'll not disclose what the food is, only where the idea came from. Years ago, I had a sales position that covered parts of Iowa and Nebraska. I discovered this food item at a small mom and pop drive-in in O'Neill, NE.
I wasn't really fond of this food, but I didn't dislike it, either. I saw it on the menu, it sounded interesting, so I tried it. It was sooooo good! That restaurant saw me almost every time I was in town!
Earlier this year, when we drove to Wyoming to see my wife's parents, we stopped at a restaurant in Lincoln, NE, specifically because they had this on their menu. Like the first time in O'Neill, it was soooo good! Now you know.
• What surprised me about my writing journey?
That's easy. The readers. I didn't know what to expect in reviews and personal feedback. Every reader seems to have an unique, fresh perspective of the book. I read and heard many cool things and learned much from my readers. I really enjoy hearing from you. One way to communicate with me is on my blog at http://www.karmanovel1.com.
I had one reader suggest something for a future book and I'm proud to say it will be in Book Two of the "Karma Novels" series. I certainly won't guarantee every suggestion will be implemented, but I will at least listen.
