T John Wardabout this book: Examine your life; those seemingly inconsequental happenings and accidents of timing ended up changing it forever, did they not? The poet, James Shirley, referred to this as the levelling dust of fate - against which we have no armour. Take the Bowen brothers, Robert and Douglas, for instance. Back in those raw, post-Second World War days, they find themselves torn apart at an early age by events over which they have no control.
As the unfortunate catalyst who destroyed his family, Douglas doesn't give a damn whether he lives or dies, and as a consequence, commits reckless acts of heroism in the Korean War, succumbs to the charms of the treacherous Linda Yeung, then finds himself recruited into the ranks of a sinister branch of MI6 His very first assignment leads to him battling to prevent a vengeful IRA man from murdering an army sergeant in the wilds of the Aden Protectorate. Meanwhile, his traumatised and sensitive brother, Robert, fights his own small wars. Can he get the better of that overbearing bully, 'Geordie' Brighouse? Will he ever succeed as a writer? Can he possibly win the love of Barbara Meadows, whose beauty ensures that she is destined for fame and fortune?
Just when Douglas finds peace and consolation in the arms of Jane Hazell and Robert looks set to win on all fronts, the levelling dust of fate throws the brothers together in a desperate fight for survival in the Australian outback.
The many locations visited and the period details in this story are completely authentic - I know because I was there!
